Moving into our new house I knew that we’d have to take things slowly when it came to decorating. After all, 4,000 square feet isn’t something that you just makeover with a snap of your fingers. However, I also really wanted to decorate the kids’ rooms as quickly as possibly. I knew that it would help them feel more at home right away in their new space. And it would help ease any anxiety about moving if they were excited about decorating their rooms. The first room on the agenda to makeover was my son’s room. He’d been so patient the past year sharing a room with his baby sister and is such a good brother. I’ve always liked the vintage industrial look but I also wanted to be sure that the room design was a reflection of him.

When I asked him what he wanted to decorate his room with he really surprised me. It was a big change from his bedroom in our previous house. But I’m so glad he inspired me to create this amazing space for him. Today I’m sharing all the changes we made to his room the past couple of weeks. Then on Wednesday I’ll share the big reveal with his room theme!

kid-approved paint colors

When I was talking to my son about paint colors he knew he wanted a blue ceiling pretty early on. I helped him pick a light blue to avoid the space seeming too dark or small. After that I gave him the choices between white or gray for his walls. We were planning to create an accent wall and I didn’t want it to see too dark or busy in there. It is very against my nature to paint a space white so I was a little nervous! But the colors he chose ended up being perfect for the room. They compliment the other design choices really nicely. I forgot to take a true “before” picture so just imagine off-white ceilings in the picture below.

an update on an accent wall

In my son’s last bedroom we made an accent wall with pallet boards. It ended up being one of my favorite things about that house! I was pretty happy when I asked him if he’d like another wall like that and he said yes. I had started collecting pallets and dismantling them when I realized I just didn’t want to take all this time with so many other things on our to-do list (like unpacking). We ended up buying these boards from Home Depot and even though it cost more than preparing the boards ourselves, it was a total time saver and totally worth it.

If you want to make a pallet accent wall I still think making your own is a great option. The cost is almost free (depending on how you do it) and there’s a great satisfaction in knowing you did it yourself. However, if you’re on a time crunch getting the boards from the store can save a lot of time.

new vintage industrial lighting

From the very beginning I knew exactly which lighting I wanted in his room. His bedroom was the only one without a ceiling fan and we’re big fans of ceiling fans. Pun only slightly intended. Let’s be honest though, most fans are not very attractive. With his loft bed we needed a fan that was smaller so he wouldn’t be hitting it all the time.

I’d had my eyes on this Vintere fan from Fanimation for awhile–even before we moved! I loved the vintage industrial style of it and I also loved the functionality of it. It had a smaller circumference but still got great reviews as far as air flow goes. I also liked that the blades were inside a metal cage. He had frequently knocked the blades on his old fan out of alignment and I was hoping to eliminate the problem.

We’ve had the Vintere from from Fanimation up for a couple of weeks now and love it. It gives out a great amount of air flow–especially for such a small fan! It comes with vintage-style Edison bulbs which look great with style of the fan. The lights are a little yellow for my liking so in the future we’ll probably switch them out for daylight Edison bulbs. That’s just my personal preference though and I feel like it gives off plenty of light for a bedroom. I also like that you can easily adjust both the fan speed and the dimness of the light using the remote control.
