If you’ve been following me for awhile you know that I love soda. Well, that’s a love I’ve passed onto my children. Root beer is their soda of choice though and luckily for us Mike makes a delicious homemade version that’s easy to brew! Keep reading for our favorite homemade root beer recipe. It will make you think twice before buying the store-bought stuff again.

The carbonation in this drink that makes soda–well, soda–comes from using dry ice. Without the dry ice causing the chemical reaction you would just end up with root beer flavored water. So this yummy and easy recipe doubles as a fun science experiment! Our kids love gathering around to watch as he puts the dry ice in and the “fog” as they call it starts pouring out of the dispenser jug!

The container you choose to make your beverage in is important. A lot of pressure is created during the brewing process. We like to use a large 2 or 5 gallon dispenser jug. It won’t crack while the dry ice is doing its thing like glass would, plus the lid will screw down tightly. You can totally make as much or as little at a time as you want–just plan your brewing container accordingly.

Homemade Root Beer

Make your own root beer at home with just a few ingredients!

Ingredients
  • root beer concentrate check usage amounts on your bottle
  • 2 cups sugar sugar substitute can be used
  • 1 gallon water
  • 1 pound dry ice
Instructions
  1. Dissolve the sugar in the water completely in a 2-5 gallon jug (or similar).

  2. Add the root beer concentrate.

  3. Add your dry ice, be careful not to let the dry ice burn you.

  4. Let sit for about 15 minutes. The root beer will stop letting off "mist" when it's ready.

where can I find dry ice?

Dry ice can be hard to find these days. Most stores around us don’t carry it, however we are usually able to find some at our local Smart & Final. If you’re unable to locate any you could use soda water instead of regular water in the recipe but you won’t get the fun fog effect that the kids love!
