Aww, sweet wintertime. When all I want to do is curl up with a book under a fluffy blanket–or five. I don’t know about you but I have way too many blankets at my house. I’ve always loved those blanket ladders you see in stores but every time I priced them out I just couldn’t justify the cost. Although I don’t have a ton of skills when it comes to building things, I knew I had the basic tools and the basic know-how to make my own. Don’t be scared thinking you need expensive tools, I’m going to show you how you can easily make your own diy blanket ladder too! Make sure you keep reading to the end for a fun giveaway!

DIY blanket ladder with basic tools.

DIY blanket ladder

materials needed:
  • wooden dowel rods (I recommend 3/4 inch), 120 inches total (that’s enough for 5 rungs at 24 inches long)
  • two pieces of 1×2″ lengths for the sides, I made mine 6 feet tall
  • power drill and bit slightly larger than the size dowel you chose
  • hand saw or buy your lengths the size you need in store (Oftentimes you can purchase the wood I have listed in these exact sizes, but you will pay more than if you buy longer pieces and pay per lf, or linear foot.)

To assemble your super easy (and affordable!) DIY blanket ladder start by measuring on your 1×2″ rails where you want your rungs places. Make a simple pencil marking and then use your drill with the spade drill bit to drill a hole all the way through.

Drill holes along the side rails with a spade drill bit.

Repeat until all your holes are drilled and then thread your wooden dowels through the holes in the side rails. You may need to use a rubber mallet to get the rungs through the drilled holes completely. The idea is that you you want to pick a drill bit size that will allow you to fit your wooden dowels rungs through, but is still snug enough that it will be secure enough without the use of wood glue or screws.

Of course, you can finish off your blanket ladder with paint or stain. I opted to leave mine natural for now as we’re in the middle of some house remodeling and I’m not quite sure how I want it to look. This DIY blanket ladder really is a simple and attractive storage solution for all your extra blankets. Plus, it keeps them in arm’s reach for when you need to snuggle up this winter!
