Halloween is only a few weeks away. This continues the trend of “oh my gosh, where has the year gone?” Lately I just feel like there are not nearly enough hours in the day. That’s why I love this fun DIY that I did with the kiddos a couple weeks ago. These DIY recycled crayons barely took any time at all and the outcome was so cute! The instructions are really short and easy to follow, but make sure you read to the end of the blog post. I’ve teamed up with some friends again to share last minute Halloween crafts. Some links contain affiliates, all opinions are my own.

DIY Recycled Crayons. Make your own crayons for any occasion. Fun and simple DIY crayons.

I have been dying to make my own recycled crayons. I already have a shop that I love buying them from, but I just wanted to see if I could. Plus, we had plenty of broken crayons pieces in our house and it seemed like a shame to throw them away. I even already had a fun Halloween jack-o-lantern silicone mold that someone had given me years ago. I knew this was the perfect chance to try to make some cute crayons for free!

materials needed:

  • silicone mold (and baking sheet for stability)
  • crayons
  • no seriously, that’s it!

Before filling your silicone mold make sure the mold is on a baking sheet for stability. The most time consuming part of this project is peeling all the crayons. Once they’re peeled and broken up unto small pieces your kids can pick the colors they want and design their crayons! I love each and every one of our unique crayon pumpkins. The pink and orange ones turned out so pretty, and my son did an amazing job of trying to replicate a jack-o-lantern face.

There are lots of different instructions online that will tell you different temperatures and times. For me I found that an oven temperature of 300° and about 15 minutes worth of time did the trick. I found it also depends on the brand and thickness of crayons you use. This project is pretty fool-proof though so as long as you keep an eye on them during the process. Once they’re done all you need to do is poke any bubbles on the back side with a toothpick and then allow to harden completely!

Still not sure if you want to make your own recycled crayons? Be sure to check out my friend Nicole’s shop, Art 2 The Extreme. Nicole is the original maker of the rainbow crayon! I have ordered from her several time and she is my go-to for fun and unique gifts for art-loving kiddos!
