Memorial Day is almost here and with it the unofficial start of summer. Many of us will celebrate the three day weekend with lake days, barbecues, and start of summer sales. However, how often do we stop to remember what Memorial Day is all about? Over the years I have learned that many people don’t really think about why we have a three day weekend at the end of May. To take it one step further, many people also don’t understand the difference between this “summer” holiday and Veterans Day in November. Today I’m sharing a fun printable crossword that will help you teach children about Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day.
Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day
Memorial Day and Veterans Day are both important American holidays that honor people who have served in the military, but they do have a major difference. The easiest way to understand that difference is this: Memorial Day honors soldiers who died while serving our country, and Veterans Day honors all people who have served in the military, whether they served during war or peace.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May each year. As I mentioned, Memorial Day is much more than just a long weekend. It is a special day to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives while protecting the United States. When my children were in Scouts BSA one of our favorite activities all year was placing flags on the graves of soldiers at our local cemetery.

what is Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11. This holiday honors all veterans, which means anyone who has served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, or Space Force. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is not only about those who died. It celebrates both living and deceased veterans who worked hard and sacrificed for our country.
A simple way to remember the difference is this:
- Memorial Day = Remembering those who died while serving.
- Veterans Day = Thanking everyone who has served.
