I have a confession to make–a month ago I had no idea who Emma M. Lion is. As an avid reader with a love for many different genres, I was shocked when I discovered how popular this book series was and yet I had heard of it until now. After binge-listening (thanks Audible) to the first eight books in two weeks, I can proudly say that I have a new favorite series. Back in January (it seems like a lifetime ago) I was sitting in my women’s group in church when they made the following announcement:
“This week for book club we’re going to be having a tea party for Emma M. Lion’s birthday!”
Knowing smiles accompanied this announcement and I noticed several other women start to murmur excitedly. Meanwhile, I was sitting there with a smile plastered on my face and nodding along with no clue what they were actually talking about.
A couple of days later, searching for something to listen to on Audible, I figured I would try listening to the first book. Spoiler alert–I loved it. I ended up listening to the whole (current) series in the span of a couple of weeks.

I have always loved the classic novels by Jane Austen. This series has a lot of similarities to her style of writing. The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower is written in an episodic style. Each book is a personal journal of a young woman in 1880s London. Each “journal” covers two months, and each chapter is a day recorded by Emma.

The witty and joyful writing follows Emma as she navigates life in her small London neighborhood of St. Crispian’s. It’s so easy to get immersed in Emma’s life as she navigates the quirky neighbors, a budding romance, good friendships, and difficult family members.
And, if you’ve only read it and haven’t listened to the audiobook, you should know that the narrator does an absolute superb job.
