a Harry Potter-inspired luggage tag

Awhile ago I had an idea to make my own luggage tags. As a family that travels frequently together, I thought it would be fun to make something personalized for us. However, even though I knew I wanted to make some tags, and I knew what materials I wanted to use, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to put on them. Then, a few weeks ago a friend of mine was talking about doing projects that felt authentic to her and a lightbulb went off in my head. Our family loves Harry Potter, our family loves traveling–why not put those two things together?! That’s how the idea for a Platform 9¾ luggage tag came to be.

what is Platform 9¾?

If you’re also a fan of Harry Potter than you know exactly what Platform 9¾ is. However, if you’re not familiar then you should know that Platform 9¾ is a (magical) train platform at King’s Cross Station in London. It’s how students board the Hogwarts Express to get to and from Hogwarts. The trick, though, is that it can only be accessed by passing through the seemingly solid barrier between platforms 9 and 10.

Harry: Excuse me sir, can you tell me where I might find Platform Nine and Three-Quarters?

I used my die cut machine to cut out the words for the Harry Potter luggage tag. Grab yours in the link down below! You can really put these together any way that you’d like. You could do a stain technique, like I did in this Christmas ornament post, or a paint technique like in this fairytale signpost tutorial.

materials needed:

For my luggage tags I opted for black paint and didn’t bother staining the wood first. However, for the cleanest paint job with a stencil the trick is a light sanding and then painting a layer of mod podge on first. When the stencil has a smooth surface to stick to, and then something painted on to seal the edges of the stencil, the paint doesn’t have anywhere to seep under.
