Halloween is fast approaching and I’m so excited to share our Halloween costumes this year. I love the classic Columbia Pictures film, A League of Their Own. I’ve been wanting to dress the kids up in vintage baseball costumes for Halloween for years now. We watched the movie with them awhile ago and they liked it fine. We re-watched it in August and I kept my fingers crossed while I asked them if they’d like to be that for Halloween. The girls were an automatic YES! My son took awhile longer to decide but I definitely wanted it to be his decision. Finally, he told me a couple weeks ago that he did want to “be the coach”, and although the character of Jimmy Dugan might not be the best role model, having our son dress up like him definitely pulls off the group costume. A League of Their Own
A League of Their Own is a fictional 1992 Sports Comedy about a real moment in history. World War II really did impact major league baseball. The movie follows the fictional owner of the Chicago Cubs, Walter Harvey (who represents the real Phillip Wrigley) and his push to start the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Although the movie features lots of players and their relationships, the main focus is on two sisters, Dottie and Kit. A new Prime Video series came out this year of the same name. However, as excited as I was to watch it I don’t feel like it had the same emotional impact as the movie and I didn’t like where they put the focus of the story line.
I do think that this is an important moment in history to remember. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League played for 12 seasons and there were 15 teams over the years. Women from all over played for their love of the game and their love of the country. Keeping America’s pastime alive during those war years was probably more impactful than we’ll ever know.
