If you’re a parent you’ve probably bought a piñata at some point. Most little kids just love hitting a piñata at a birthday party! Whether it’s the attempts to break it open or the anticipation for the treats inside, it seems to be a crowd favorite. It’s also a great activity for pretty much any large get together, whether birthday party, Cinco de Mayo, or Encanto sing-along. Today I’m sharing how to make a mini piñata. These are so fun to make for party favors ahead of time. Or you can lay out the materials and have your guests make their own to take home! Read all the way until the end for a fun craft-lovers giftaway!

Making a mini piñata is not hard but you will need to do some prep work. First of all, unless you have older guests I would pick a very simple shape–like a circle. This rainbow will probably be tricky for little ones to figure out. If you have younger guests I would also prep more ahead of time. For instance, don’t just cut the cardboard out, but go ahead and form it with the duct tape. That way all that needs to be done is sticking the tissue paper on. And don’t forget to poke the holes on top and thread through the string ahead of time.

materials needed:
  • Thin cardboard (cereal boxes work great)
  • Mod Podge or other craft sealer
  • Craft paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Duct tape
  • Tissue Paper
  • String or yarn for hanging
steps:
  1. Cut out your cardboard into the shape that you want. If you will have younger guests or if you have time tape the pieces together to form the shape before guests arrive.
  2. Tape the pieces together with duct tape leaving a small opening somewhere. Poke holes on top for hanging before taping all together.
  3. Cut strips of tissue paper. Then cut fringes in the strips of tissue paper. No need to measure and be exact, you won’t be able to tell how perfect it is once you get it on your cardboard. You should only about 8-12 fringed strips depending on the size of your piñata.
  4. Paint a section of cardboard with the Mod Podge and lay your tissue paper strips down one at a time. I suggest starting at the bottom and working your way up.
  5. Once the entire piñata is covered trim off any excess tissue paper you need to.
