Table of Contents

When you think of Nevada you probably think of Las Vegas. Then by association—gambling, buffets, and extravagant shows. Maybe you think about Reno, the biggest little city in the world. And I’m sure the word “desert” would come to mind if someone asked you to describe the state. To be honest, I’ve driven all through the state and those are the first things that come to my mind. However, there are plenty of unexpected gems in the state of Nevada. If you have time to wander a little bit  you’re sure to find something good just off the beaten path. Whether you’re a homeschooling family or just one that loves to explore together you should check out these great spots for Nevada field trips.

Note: several of these locations have temporary closures or reduced hours/experiences in place due to COVID-19 restrictions. I am sharing now so you can plan ahead. Be sure to check each website to confirm which locations are open and when.

5 great field trips in Nevada

Great Basin National Park

Great Basin is in the middle of nowhere, literally. You definitely don’t want to get stranded anywhere in the area but that should dissuade you from going! Your kids will never forget the experience of a cave tour and be sure to stop at the visitor center. Cave Tours are temporarily suspended but some visitor centers are open and hikes are available.

Hoover Dam

Have you ever been to the Hoover Dam? Who wouldn’t want to take a dam tour?… okay, I couldn’t help myself. Even if you don’t want to pay admission fees, check out the website for what you can see there for free. This experience would be great for a S.T.E.M. field trip for middle school and up! All public access areas are currently closed to vehicle and foot traffic.

California Trail Interpretive Center

This is one of our favorite pit stops on the I-80. We always try to make a quick stop and stretch our legs. The California Trail Interpretive Center has dioramas, interactive displays, and live reenactments on certain weekends. The best part? It’s completely free. Currently closed, you can find some neat resources on their Facebook page though!

Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park

Located in Downtown Vegas this State Historic Park is like a step back in time. Marking the location of the first permanent, non-native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley admission is only $3 and free for kids 12 and under! You can even see the remains of an adobe fort built in 1855. Open with restrictions.

The Discovery

This museum is a MUST if you’re ever in Reno with kids. Full of interactive, hands-on exhibits you can spend the whole day here and never get bored! Be sure to check out my full review! Open to the public October 3-11 and on weekends, check their website for details.
