Fry’s first 100 words

If you’ve ever taught a kid to read than you are probably familiar with Fry’s Sight Words. These are the words that are most commonly found in reading materials for elementary grades. Specifically, the first 100 words are those that beginner readers should be learning first. These words are often the focus of beginner readers like the Bob books.

I’ve been playing sight word memory with my kids since my second (now 8) was first learning to read! The first time we played we started out with simple flashcards. I had my son write the sight word first on a flashcard, then had my daughter (who was learning how to read) write out the word on the second flashcard. Then they would play the matching game together.

Over time cards got lost and bent and I printed up some new ones using a free flashcard sight word printable I found online. But with our frequency of play those too began to show their age and I figured it was time to make a new set of sight word memory game cards.

This sight word matching game includes the first 20 words from Fry’s first 100 word list. However, there’s also 10 blank cards so you can write in any words you’d like to add. I recommend printing on card stock and then laminating. It cost me about $9.00 to laminate all these cards at my local Staples. These are also great to use as flashcards.
