In March we were able to take a quick trip to one of our favorite places–Yosemite National Park. Although it was still technically Winter we’d had unusually warm and dry weather. So we figured it would be the perfect time to go! Little did I know it would be our last trip for awhile. We were in the park less than 48 hours but we had a great time, enjoyed mostly good weather, and had zero crowds to fight with! In fact, I think visiting Yosemite in Spring might just be my new favorite time of year to go. Read all about what we did with the kiddos for a great time in a beautiful National Park!
Yosemite in Spring
bridalveil fall
Friday was a pretty full day spent in Yosemite Valley. We stopped at Bridalveil Fall first and “hiked” to the base of the falls. It’s actually a paved walkway the entire way so it’s easy to do with kids. The water flow was pretty great when we went. However, during colder Springs there may not be much snow melt yet and the output may be less.

Cathedral Beach is another great area to visit in Yosemite in Spring. The crowds are low so you can easily find parking right next to the picnic spot. Plus, the water level hasn’t hit peak capacity yet so it’s still low enough and slow enough to walk down on the beach and safely play near the water.

yosemite village
We also drove over to Yosemite Village for a stop at the store and some lunch before heading over to Yosemite Falls. Again, parking was incredibly easy to find at this time of year and crowds were minimal. Unlike Summertime the shuttles were nearly empty. We didn’t have time to take advantage of a park shuttle during our recent visit. However, it’s definitely a great choice for getting around the park in the Spring!
Keep in mind that in 2020 once the park reopens things will be a little different. They are planning on limiting the number of people that can wnter each day. They’re also canceling shuttles and other transport until 2021.

Be sure to stop by Yosemite Falls too. The low crowds of Yosemite in Spring mean that you’ll be able to get the perfect photo op without hundreds of tourists in the background! Just like with Bridalveil Fall, the water output during this time will depend on how the weather has been. The falls were pretty impressive during our visit, however you can always check the live webcam beforehand. With somr recent, late season snow there’s a good chance for a high flow!

Although the weather on Friday was perfectly ideal for visiting Yosemite Valley, Saturday was another story. It was chilly and drizzly as we headed out to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. However, the early season and somewhat dreary weather again meant low crowds and gorgeous views of Wapama Fall.
Things to remember when visiting Yosemite in Spring:
- Weather can change quickly, come with layers and some rain gear. And always be sure to check the weather report ahead of time!
- In the “off season” some park services may be closed to be sure to bring water and snacks. You can also check ahead of time online to see what dining facilities and bathrooms might be shut for maintenance.
- Bears may be just starting to come out of hibernation. As always, be cautious and always follow proper protocol with storing and discarding food.
