carlsbad

Let’s start with my southern-most pick—Carlsbad. Located just north of the “more famous” San Diego, Carlsbad has it all. Sandy beaches, rocky tidepools, berry picking, cool murals, unique eateries, a small town feel, and even an amusement park. In fact, I definitely recommend spending more time than just a day. However, if you live close enough and a day is all you have you’ll be sure to find something for everyone in your family to enjoy.

monterey bay

Our next California day trip destination brings us north to Monterey Bay. Another coastal community with a small town feel it’s probably best known for its aquarium. And although I definitely recommend it, if you want to stay outdoors or just don’t want to spend the money (tickets are pricey) there’s still plenty to do. Find some seals, sea lions, and otters on the beach before you discover a new favorite place to eat.

yosemite

Of course I just had to mention Yosemite National Park. Lots if people spend several days here. However, if you’re lucky enough to live within a short drive it makes for a fantastic California day trip. Keep in mind that in 2020 they will be requiring day use reservations indefinitely to limit attendance numbers. Be sure to plan accordingly so you’re not disappointed!

lodi

I know, Lodi seems like a weird suggestion. In fact, if you’re not from central or northern California you might not even know where it is. But Lodi is home to the beautiful Sacramento River Delta as well as one of our favorite camp resorts—Tower Park Resort. And if you can’t stay overnight it’s okay because you can still purchase a day pass to enjoy the amenities. For the adults that might be interested the area is also home to several wineries.

Camping in Fall?? Absolutely! Have a fun time this Halloween season at Jellystone Tower Park Resort in Lodi, CA.
lake tahoe

Our family loves Lake Tahoe and makes a day trip out there at least once a year. Located just two hours from Sacramento it’s a great place to escape the Summer heat. North Lake Tahoe boasts Kings Beach which is a great place to spend several hours before making a stop at a local ice cream shop. Meanwhile, south Lake Tahoe offers guests thrilling adventures on the mountain year round. You really can’t go wrong with either spot.

redding

Again, another interesting selection for my list of California day trips. But when we stopped last Summer on our road trip I realized what a neat place it was. Your number one stop in this town located right on I-5 should be Turtle Bay Exploration Park It features an impressive hands-on museum and the famous sundial bridge. Both are things that your kids will absolutely love.
