My family and I received tickets to an advance screening of 20th Century Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King. All opinions are our own!

Some lessons stick with us through the years. When I was in seventh grade social studies we did a unit on the middle ages. Honestly, I don’t remember much of what we did or learned except for one thing. While we were studying medieval history we practiced chivalry in the classroom and the girls in the class got to leave first while the boys in the class were left behind to put our chairs on top of our desks. I found myself thinking about those days this past weekend when my family and I went to an advance screening of The Kid Who Would Be King.

The Kid Who Would Be King

The Kid Who Would Be King tells the story of Alexander Elliot, a young boy who definitely isn’t one of the “cool” kids. In fact, while running away from a group of bullies he comes across the legendary sword of King Arthur–Excalibur. Alex meets the wizard Merlin (although he’s not who you’d expect), forms his own Knights of the Round Table, and sets off on a quest to save the world from the evil Morgana. Friends and enemies become allies as they all realize they’re so much stronger together.

our family’s review

We ended up taking all of our kids to The Kid Who Would Be King even though I was a little unsure how our younger two would do. We’ve all gone to movies before several times, but typically they’re more suitable for a younger audience. However, I was very impressed that all my kids from my eight year old to my three year old were entertained. The only one who struggled was my almost-one year old but that’s understandable, right?

The Kid Who Would Be King is rated PG but isn’t just for kids–my husband and I really enjoyed it too! With funny humor spread throughout and thought-provoking quotes I actually found it to be a lot more deep than I was expecting.

There are special effects all throughout the movie and I was very impressed by them. Although there are many that are funny or just plain “awesome”, there are also some that can be quite scary for young viewers. There was one part where my daughter sitting next to me jumped and almost spilled the popcorn out of her lap!

I got a brief review from each of the kids (well, the ones that can talk anyway). Read on for some very honest opinions on The Kid Who Would Be King–be prepared for spoiler alerts!

out of the mouth of babes

8 year old: It was pretty good, especially this part–“This is instead of lessons today!” (Starts quoting the movie with accents.) I liked the part where they were fighting the trees. A scary part was when they kids and the sword started sinking in the dirt.

6 year old: It was kind of scary and kind of cool. (Very serious expression on her face.) I liked when they all worked together as a team. When they were going through the vines and the vines were trying to grab them it was a scary part.

4 year old: It was good! (With a big smile.) I liked the part where he pulled the sword from the stone!

3 year old: I liked when they were fighting the bad guy. (Big smile that instantly turns very serious.) It was scary.

The Kid Who Would Be King comes to theaters this Friday, January 25th! Looking back I would probably have kept my three year old and baby home, but all of my other kids were just fine. My four year old actually handled the scary situations better than my six year old. Know what your kids can handle and enjoy!
