Okay folks, here’s the thing. On the one hand I know that I just had a baby less than three months ago. My body needs time to recover and bounce back–or at least as back as it’s going to get after having five kids in eight years. However, being aware of that and being able to truly accept that are two completely different things. So I’m continually working on loving my postpartum body and learning to dress it in a way that’s flattering. thoughts on my postpartum body

A couple of months ago I shared that I’ve been hard on myself lately. Although things have gotten better since then, apparently I still need to remind myself periodically that nourishing a baby full time (first as a human incubator and now as a human milk cow) takes a toll on your body.

Confession #1, I’ve pretty much stalled out with weight loss. That’s fairly normal for me while I’m nursing full time but it’s still frustrating. Especially when I really am making good food choices 90% of the time and feel like I have nothing to show for it.

Confession #2, even though I started this pregnancy at my lowest weight, I gained the most of any of my pregnancies. So heap on even more frustration because I know that I did this to myself. And I could have taken steps during my pregnancy to make this a lot easier on me.

However, I have learned some things about dressing my postpartum body this time around that make all the difference:

  • High-waisted jeans are your best friend. Seriously, they hold everything in like a corset, on they’re more comfortable. With all the stylish options nowadays no one will accuse you of wearing mom jeans.
  • Say yes to loose clothes, say no to baggy ones. When we’re holding on to excess weight we tend to wear baggy clothes in an attempt to hide it. However, that typically just accentuates it. Skinny or straight-leg jeans (high-waisted of course!) with a top that is more flowy is the perfect, everyday postpartum look.
  • Wear what makes you happy. Whether it’s bright colors or fun patterns, wear the things that make you smile. When you feel happy, you feel more confident!
  • Dress up for date night. Make date night a priority after baby and take the opportunity to dress up. Throw on some heels becasue they do wonders for your calves and posture! Then pull something out of your closet that doesn’t have to be nursing friendly!
  • Accentuate the positive. We all of things that we like more about our bodies… and things that we like less. I tend to gain a lot of weight in my arms, so if I like to wear longer sleeves that help to cover them.
  • Pull your look together with accessories. Taking an extra 60 seconds and adding some accessories to your outfit will help you to look more put together. Even when you’re walking around Target with dark circles under your eyes and a messy mom bun!
