a year of color: black and white Alice in Wonderland sign

Alice in Wonderland handpainted sign

I know what you’re probably thinking–

“Justine, it’s time for your October year of color post; this month the color is supposed to be black. We were expecting something having to do with Halloween…”

I know, me too. Then several weeks ago when I was thinking about it I started thinking about a hand painted sign instead and for whatever reason it had nothing to do with Halloween.

I’ve always liked Alice in Wonderland, in fact it’s the theme in my girls’ room. There’s so many good quotes in those books, and one particular that I’ve always loved. I thought this one would be perfect for our dining room where I currently have a mirror hanging but been thinking I would like a change.

For some reason one of my favorite parts of making any sign is the distressing once it’s all dry. I love seeing the wood grain come through, I think it gives the finished project so much character! You can find a more detailed tutorial for my stenciling technique in this post.
