Does your family love musicals? Our whole family enjoys musicals of all types so I’m really excited about sharing this post with you today. If you’re visiting southern Utah our family highly recommends a stop at Tuacahn Amphitheatre. Keep reading for all our Tuacahn Amphitheatre tips and why this place shines so much! This post is in partnership with Tuacahn Amphitheatre, all opinions are my own.
everything you need to know about Tuacahn Amphitheatre
While we were on our 2025 summer road trip we stayed in southern Utah for five nights. Of course we had a blast at the campground, and we visited one of our family’s favorite national parks, but what else did we do during our visit? We made the short drive from our campground in Hurricane, to Ivins to take in some incredible Broadway in the Canyon! Imagine an outdoor amphitheater set amidst red rock cliffs on a warm evening with a slight breeze. The crowd slowly settles down while the first strains of music comes from the orchestra. That’s Tuacahn Amphitheatre–a place where Broadway-worthy musicals meet breathtaking desert landscapes.

the history of Tuacahn
Construction of the amphitheatre began in 1993. Despite hiccups—like a halted build due to protected desert tortoises—by April 1995 the amphitheatre opened with a dedication by President Gordon B. Hinckley and a performance by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (then called the Mormon Tabernacle Choir).
The inaugural production, Utah!, dramatized regional pioneer tales and featured a stunning flash flood effect on stage. Eventually, Broadway-style hits began rotating on the stage’s schedule after 1999—from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to Disney classics, with Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, and others captivating crowds ever since.
Today, Tuacahn’s amphitheatre seats nearly 2,000, offering full-scale water, pyrotechnic, and acoustic design. On the evening of the performance of Wizard of Oz we saw the show ended with fireworks! There’s also an indoor space, Hafen Theatre, that hosts year-round intimate productions.
Tuacahn Amphitheatre tips for your family
tip #1: enjoy pre-show dining at the Tuacahn Café
We’ll start our Tuacahn Amphitheatre tips with where our family started our evening–the Tuacahn CafĂ©. I had heard great things about the food here and it did not disappoint. The Tuacahn CafĂ© is tucked right by the outdoor amphitheatre and is the perfect pre-show meal. You can even bring any of your leftovers into the venue with you! Actually, you can even bring you own food from home too!
The Tuacahn Café serves everything from hearty burgers and street tacos, to fresh salads and gourmet pasta. If you come early—like during the weekly Saturday market—they even have pancakes, bacon, and juice in the morning. We loved sitting in the café and looking at all the show props and watching the end of some rehearsal time on stage. It was like getting a backstage pass!

tip #2: utilize Tuacahn’s ShowCare service
If you’re a parent, the ShowCare service is a game-changer. Why aren’t more places doing this?! Since 2012, Tuacahn’s secure childcare has welcomed infants and kids up to seven, offering supervised activities steps from the amphitheatre entrance. This is a great option for kids that may be too young, or just too young to appreciate musicals yet. And at just $30 a child, it’s more affordable than getting a babysitter at home.
ShowCare staff are background-checked, first aid-certified, and trained in early childhood care. I felt totally confident leaving my two year old and five year old in their capable hands and they walked in without a backward glance at me. But if you’re feeling a little nervous, you can check on your little ones without them seeing you from a monitor in the lobby area anytime during the performance! How awesome is that? Knowing your little ones are happily engaged nearby while you enjoy a world-class musical? That’s what I call a mom (or dad) win! I do recommend you pre-register to ensure there is space.

tip #3: comfort and convenience is key
Tuacahn really has thought of everything–including your comfort. They offer seat cushion rentals for just a couple dollars and the price it totally worth it. And as I mentioned earlier, I love that you can bring in your own food or drinks. It helps you stay snack-filled and hydrated even during the warmest Utah evenings.

tip #4: Tuacahn is more than Broadway in the Canyon
Tuacahn is more than incredible shows. There’s a bustling Saturday Market (free admission) featuring local artisans, live music, and of course, the café serving pancakes until noon. Inside, the Hafen Theatre hosts smaller productions like Elf or White Christmas. And year-round events—from concerts and symphony nights to holiday lights and nativity scenes during Christmas in the Canyon—mean there’s always something incredible to experience.

tip #5: save money on tickets with a discount code
I am so thrilled to share that I have a discount code for the 2025 show year! Use the code LITTLEDOVE to save 25% off Monday through Thursday performances and 10% off weekend performances of The Little Mermaid, The Wizard of Oz and Newsies NOW through September 11th!
final Tuacahn Amphitheatre tips
Our family loved seeing a production of Wizard of Oz and were completely blown away by all the staging and special effects that were utilized. Here a few last minute tips to make the most of your evening at Tuacahn:
- – Get there early. Whether you want incredible pictures against the red rock, a relaxed dining experience, or need to drop your kid off at ShowCare, make sure you leave plenty of time.
- – Park near the exit. If you arrive early it’s tempting to park as close as possible, but I recommend parking close to the exit. That way you’re not stuck behind the line of cars when it’s time to leave. And you’re closest to the incredible fountain to a photo op!
- – Remember there are multiple shows. Tuacahn is a unique compared to most theatres in that there are several shows happening at once that rotate nightly. That means you could see more than one during your vacation!
- – Dress comfortably. Unlike most Broadway shows, Tuacahn is a much more relaxed vibe. This is great since it can be quite toasty before the sun in the outdoor amphitheatre. However, I’m old school and still feel like one should dress up for the theatre so we opted for dressy casual. We were totally comfortable in the heat with comfy skirts on.
Have you caught a show at Tuacahn? I’d love to hear about your favorite memory or show in the comments below!
