the importance of swaddling

January is here and my due date is just about a month away. Although, I’ve never made it to my due date, so who knows?! But I am in full blown baby mode. Today I am so excited to share a great giveaway with you that I organized with some other blogging mommas-to-be! All of us are due in the first part of the year and decided to get together and share some of our favorite baby products with you, and one lucky winner will get it all! My contribution is one of my absolute, favorite baby items–muslin swaddle blankets from Aden + Anais. So before we get to the giveaway I’d like to share some of my thoughts about the importance of swaddling.

the importance of swaddling

Growing up I was one of four daughters. Two of my sisters were eight and ten years younger than I was. So I had a lot of experience with baby-related things like changing diapers, preparing bottles, and swaddling. The swaddling blankets I knew then though were small and not very stretchy. Trying to wrap up a baby in them could be tricky. Most of the time they were made out of flannel that wasn’t all that soft either. Then, when I was pregnant with my son I was given some muslin swaddling blankets from Aden + Anais and I discovered how amazing swaddling blankets could really be. These were so large, so breathable and stretchy, and so soft from the beginning (and they just get softer with each wash).

After my son made his appearance I quickly became an even bigger believer in the power of swaddling your baby. My son was sleeping through the night consistently (defined as sleeping for six hour stretches) by two months old. Thankfully, all of my children have followed suit sleeping through the night by about three or four months old. I will admit that I think other factors have helped them be such good sleepers–establishing a routine early on, implementing dream feedings, desensitizing them to loud noises by not being afraid to vacuum, etc. while they’re sleeping. However, I think it all began with keeping my babies feeling cozy and secure from the beginning with swaddling.
